UI leading scorer returns, but Penn State blanks Illini in soccer.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Illinois could have used NCAA goal leader Jannelle Flaws on Sunday against No. 17 Penn State.
Flaws was limited to 20 minutes after suffering a head injury in the first half of a 5-0 loss to the Nittany Lions in a Big Ten soccer match.
“Once again, we were put in a situation where we needed everyone to do more, contribute more and execute more,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “That just didn’t happen. Penn State is a good attacking team and they created a lot, but we also put ourselves in really tough situations with unforced turnovers and mental errors.
“Confidence and execution comes from the work you put in — it gives you the fitness and the skills to be consistent. We need to put this behind us, continue to put the work in and move forward.”
The Illini (8-6-2 overall, 3-4-1 Big Ten) were shut out for the second time this season and were limited to eight shots.
Flaws returned to start the second half, but she did not attempt a shot.
In women's golf:
Schuldt lifts Illini. UI senior women’s golfer Ember Schuldt finished third, leading No. 22 Illinois to second place Sunday at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Greenwood, Ind.
UC Davis claimed the team title.
