PAXTON — An autopsy determined that a single stab wound to the chest caused a Paxton man's death following a fight outside a downtown Paxton bar last week, Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said.
Sean F. Kelley, 33, of Paxton remained jailed Monday on a $1 million bond in connection with the stabbing death of Jeffrey D. Potts, 49, of Paxton.
Mr. Potts and Kelley were found lying on the sidewalk in front of Shooky's Bar, 103 N. Market St., when Paxton police responded to a fight around 11:49 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from Paxton Police Chief Bob Bane.
Mr. Potts had been stabbed in the upper-left chest and was taken by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Bane said.
Northrup said Mr. Potts was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. Friday by a physician in the emergency room.
An autopsy Friday determined Mr. Potts died from a single stab wound to the chest, Northrup said. Because of the ongonig investigation, Northrup declined to say whether there were additional stab wounds.
Ford County State's Attorney Matt Fitton said it might be late this week before he finishes reviewing police reports and decides whether to file formal charges against Kelley.
Kelley was arrested at the scene. He was taken to Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City, where he was treated for injuries, then to the Ford County Jail, where he would have to pay $100,000 to be released.
Bane said police recovered a knife at the scene.
Bane said the dispute started inside the bar, but the stabbing occurred outside on the sidewalk. Bane said he did not know what the dispute was about.
