URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted possessing cocaine last spring has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Champaign County Judge Rich Klaus on Monday agreed to recommend Kyle M. Pickens, 35, of the 1200 block of Clifford Drive, for a prison where he can receive drug treatment.
Pickens pleaded guilty in September to possession of between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine, admitting that the drugs were found in safes and containers in a court-ordered search of the Clifford Drive home on May 1.
Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Carlson said during that search Urbana narcotics officers found about 2-1/2 ounces of cocaine, $30,000 in cash and cannabis. Pickens confessed to police that he had been selling drugs for 16 years, she said.
Court records show Pickens had prior convictions for domestic battery, possession of cannabis and driving under the influence.
In exchange for his plea, a more serious Class X felony charge of possession with intent to deliver cocaine was dismissed as was a separate case charging him with having cannabis for sale.
