Illinois and Virginia have met twice before on the football field.
Both came during bowl games, and both resulted in wins for Illinois, with the Illini beating the Cavaliers 31-21 in the 1990 Citrus Bowl and winning 63-21 in the 1999 Micronpc.com Bowl.
The two schools are guaranteed to play each other again. Well into the future, though.
Illinois announced a home-and-home series with the Cavaliers on Wednesday. Illinois will play at Virginia on Sept. 11, 2021, with Virginia making a trip to Champaign for a nonconference game on Sept. 10, 2022.
Those are the first games announced on Illinois' schedule in either seasons. Illinois has its schedules finalized through the 2018 season, with the 2019 schedule nearly complete as well.
