Tennis, gymnastics championships might land in Champaign-Urbana.
INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Illinois is in the running to host another NCAA championship tournament in men’s and women’s tennis.
The NCAA announced Wednesday that the UI is among eight finalists for Division I tennis championship sites during 2015-18. The UI hosted the tennis championships last spring for the first time.
The school also is a host site finalist for the men’s gymnastics championships during those seasons, the NCAA announced.
Finalists were selected by the respective sport committees, a group of coaches and administrators from NCAA member schools and conferences.
Those committees will select the winning sites, which must then be approved by the appropriate divisional championships cabinets or committees before being announced Dec. 11.
Other finalists in tennis are Baylor, Georgia, Stanford, Texas A&M, Tulsa/Tulsa Sports Commission, Vanderbilt/Nashville Sports Council and Wake Forest.
The UI is one of six finalists to host in men’s gymnastics, joined by Illinois-Chicago/Chicago Sports Commission, Minnesota, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Army.
Illinois has hosted the men’s gymnastics championships three times, in 1954, 1961 and 2004.
The 2014 Division I tennis championships will be held in Athens, Ga. The 2014 men’s gymnastics championships are in Ann Arbor, Mich.
