Some representatives from the University of Illinois are making their way overseas this weekend to strengthen their ties with alumni in China.
President and C.E.O. of the UI Alumni Association Loren Taylor said the trip was first suggested by an alum, who will be the group's host in China, who travels from Beijing to the UI campuses for alumni board meetings.
Taylor called this trip "historic" because he said while students, alumni and faculty have traveled to China before, it has never been done on such a large scale.
Taylor added that the UI has a long-standing relationship with students from China, whether they got their education here and stayed in the U.S. or returned to China or another country. He called this weekend's trip an expansion of the long held relationship between the UI, its alumni and its friends in China.
The group heads to China this Sunday for the week-long visit. Taylor said the travelers are mostly paying their own way, with the alumni association picking up a small portion of the costs for things like gratuities. The UI Employees Credit Union is also sponsoring the trip.
