Between 1995 and 2010, diabetes grew 60 percent among the adult population of Illinois. The disease is projected to grow 25 percent more by 2020, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Some lifestyle changes that can help lower type 2 diabetes risk include watching weight, and for those overweight, setting meaningful weight loss goals, along with eating a healthful diet, doing 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity five days a week and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control, according to the health department.
