Illini middle blocker Maddie Mayers was named Big Freshman of the Week in volleyball for the second time this season on Monday.
ROSEMONT — Middle blocker Maddie Mayers wasn’t on the floor Friday night for the first of two Illini volleyball matches last weekend. That didn’t keep the redshirt freshman from earning Big Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season on Monday.
UI coach Kevin Hambly described Mayers’ absence from the court against Indiana as a coach’s decision. When Mayers returned to the rotation one night later, she produced seven kills and five block assists to help No. 25 Illinois sweep No. 18 Purdue at Huff Hall. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native hit a career-high .700 in 10 swings.
Mayers previously was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week on Sept. 2.
