The state is once again extending the deadline for its retirees to verify eligibility of dependents on group insurance plans. The new deadline is now Jan. 31, 2014.
SPRINGFIELD — The state is once again extending the deadline for its retirees to verify eligibility of dependents on group insurance plans.
The new deadline is now Jan. 31, 2014.
"We want to make sure people have enough time to get their required documentation from the IRS," said Mike Claffey, deputy director of the Illinois Office of Communication and Information.
Some retirees have been running into problems getting documentation from the IRS on time, Claffey said. Some retirees are also still dealing with the selection of their Medicare Advantage plans and facing that enrollment deadline coming up Dec. 13, he said.
Verification is being required for an audit, being conducted by an independent firm, to make sure only eligible dependents are covered under state group insurance plans.
The eligibility deadline was originally Oct. 25, but pushed to Dec. 6 due to the extended federal government shutdown. The new longer deadline should give retirees sufficient time, Claffey said.
"We must ensure that no retirees or dependents inadvertently lose access to their eligible benefits," Simone McNeil, the state's acting director of the Department of Central Management Services said in a written statement.
