URBANA — Two Champaign men are in the Champaign County Jail after police found a loaded gun in a vehicle the men used over the weekend.
Brandon D. Ward, 22, who listed an address in the 1600 block of Lockraven Road, C, was charged on Monday with possession of a stolen firearm, and Davion K. Hedrick, 24, who listed an address in the 1700 block of West John Street, C, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm and being a felon possessing or using a firearm.
According to a police report, Champaign officers stopped a vehicle owned by Ward’s mother on Sunday for improper lane usage and failing to obey a stop sign.
Ward was the front-seat passenger, and Hedrick was in the back seat.
The officers detected a faint smell of suspected burned marijuana, so they brought a police dog to the scene.
The dog alerted on the vehicle, and police found suspected marijuana crumbs all over the front passenger seat.
After police noticed Ward pushing something under his seat and Hedrick pressing items against the object from his side of the floorboard, officers discovered a loaded black pistol under the front passenger seat. There were 12 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber, police said.
According to the report, the gun had previously been reported stolen from Rural King following a burglary there.
Police also found a blue backpack, allegedly containing 22 rounds of ammunition, in the vehicle’s trunk.
According to police, Ward has a valid FOID card, but Hedrick does not.
Both men are being held at the jail on $50,000 bond.
Ward is due back in court on Feb. 8, and Hedrick on Feb. 11.
