URBANA — The Champaign County state's attorney's office recently dismissed gun-related charges against a Rantoul man.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz cited "uncooperative witnesses who could not be served" with subpoenas to testify as the reason for dismissing charges against Fectory Spears.
Spears, 51, of the 300 block of South Steffler Street, had been charged in September with aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with his arrest on Sept. 4. His jury trial on those charges had been scheduled for this week before Judge Tom Difanis.
Rantoul police said in September that police were called to the 300 block of South Steffler early that day on a shots fired call. They learned there had been a fight among three men and that after the fight broke up, Spears allegedly fired two rounds in the direction of the apartment of one of the men in the fight.
