Place for pottery
I need to check out the exhibition "The Potters of Mata Ortiz" which opened in November at Cinema Gallery, 120 W. Main St., U. The show, which is on view through Saturday, features 40 ceramic pieces from Mata Ortiz, a Mexican village that's home to 400 potters! Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, or by appointment (call 367-3711).
I've been impressed by the Americana acts Joe and Dawn Taylor bring to their Sleepy Creek Vineyard tasting room near Oakwood. At 7 p.m. Friday, Asheville, N.C.-based Woody Pines will perform what's billed as a "unique style of viper jazz, ragtime and blues." Tickets: $12 each, or $10 for a group of six or more. If you buy as a group the vineyard reserves a table for you. For more info, call 733-0330 or go to http://on.fb.me/JNroNX .
Great Cover Up
Being jazz-centric, I admit I haven't attended in a long time the annual Great Cover Up, featuring local rock bands, some in costume, covering songs by their favorite bands. I've heard it's a gas. The 23rd Annual Great Cover Up will be Thursday, Friday and Jan. 19, 23-24 at the Highdive, 51 Main St., C.
