— Of the many things on Eddie Johnson's to-do list this weekend, replicating his game-winning shot to knock off No. 1 Michigan State in 1979 isn't a high priority.
"If they bring me on the court and ask me to take that shot again, I'll probably shoot an airball," the former Illini great said.
Johnson will be introduced during Saturday's UI-Michigan State game (7 p.m. tip) at State Farm Center. His appearance will cap a hectic stretch in C-U which kicks off with his appearance at Friday's Rebounders luncheon in Urbana. He'll lead off "Saturday SportsTalk" on WDWS 1400-AM and stick around our radio station (2301 S. Neil, C) until 11 a.m. to sign copies of his recently released book, "You Big Dummy: An Athlete's 'Simple' Guide To A Successful Career."
While you're there, feel free to ask him about that shot to beat Magic Johnson and Co.
"I've probably had 30,000 people tell me they were at that game," Johnson said. "I still don't grasp how important and powerful winning that game was."
— In today's e3 we spotlight the Great Cover Up , which kicks off tonight in downtown Champaign. I'm told it's a good time. And I know it's for a good cause as part of this year's proceeds are to go to Gifford State Bank's Tornado Relief Fund.
We have the times, dates and location in e3. What we don't list is what musical acts will be mimicked.
"That's a secret," longtime participant Mike Ingram said. "The general rule is you can't do something that's been done before."
Can you give us a clue?
"I'm not hinting one way or the other, but I think it's Billy Ocean's turn," Ingram said. "It's finally time for 'Caribbean Queen.' "
