VILLA GROVE — After city crews struggled to remove snow from Main Street during the recent heavy snowfall, the city has decided to establish a snow route on Main Street from Jefferson to Railroad Street.
They will also re-establish parking restrictions from 2 to 5 a.m. in that area. Signs will be reinstalled and the current ordinance will be more stringently enforced.
"(The crews) had to come back and plow four times to clear Main Street. It was a nightmare," said Alderman Stan Miller, who also resides on Main Street.
The city intends to develop an ordinance that will prohibit parking on the snow route after an accumulation of 2 inches of snow or more.
No other snow route designations are being considered at this time. "That's the street that has businesses on it that generate taxes, which keep the city going," said Miller.
In other business, the council addressed complaints about illegal dumping of trash into dumpsters located on city property. Mayor Terry Harbin said he will ask for dumpsters to be removed from city parks during the winter months and research installing a surveillance camera for the city yard waste dumping area, which also includes trash containers stored there by Illini Recycling.
