In 1914, Urbana went out of the beer business this morning when Mayor O.L. Browder personally emptied the contents of about 300 bottles that were seized several weeks ago. Browder said he has found out who owned the beer and that there will be some developments later on.
In 1964, Donald Day, 21, of Champaign has been charged with mob action along with two other men after a brawl early Monday at the U.S. 150 Club in Belgium, near Danville, in which 15 people were reported injured. Earlier this month, Day was released from the State Penal Farm at Vandalia, where he had served months on a battery conviction.
In 1999, don't look for a new Meijer store or a movie theater complex in southeast Urbana this year, said Scott Nowakowski, Meijer's senior real estate representative. He said the retail chain still plans to build a store in Urbana, but that it wouldn't happen in 1999.
