URBANA — A Mahomet man who admitted he intended to have sex with a minor girl has been sentenced to 30 months of probation.
Donald Garrison, 20, who listed an address in the 500 block of Dorchester Court, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Judge Tom Difanis to a single count of traveling to meet a minor, a felony. In exchange for his plea, a more serious charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse was dismissed.
Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar told Difanis that Garrison met the Mahomet girl, then 14, in the summer of 2013 and the two began communicating through text messages, on Facebook and through email.
Between June and October, Garrison traveled to meet the girl for the purpose of having sex with her, Lozar said.
Garrison was criminally charged in November.
As part of his probation, Garrison was ordered to have no contact with the 15-year-old girl and to register as a sex offender.
Lozar said Garrison had no prior criminal convictions.
