In 1914, Sen. Lewis has requested that Postmaster General Burleson hold up the commission of C.J. Mulliken, recently confirmed as postmaster at Champaign, pending the investigation of protests received by him. Mulliken was recommended by Congressman Borchers over Frank Solon, chairman of the Champaign County Democratic Party, who had the backing of Roger Sullivan and Gov. Dunne.
In 1964, an early morning fire Friday raced through store buildings in Paxton's main business district, burning out the interior of four stores and causing extensive damage to a fifth. Fire Chief Mike Siebert estimated damage at a half-million dollars. The fire reportedly began in the basement of a shoe store at 137 N. Market St.
In 1999, a change to 12-hour shifts for Urbana police patrol officers is putting more officers on the streets and saving the city the cost of overtime, but some officers say they are more tired and are spending less time at home.
