URBANA — An Urbana man who had drugs on him when arrested last summer has been sentenced to a year of conditional discharge.
Christoper Palmer, 23, who listed an address in the 900 block of West Eads Street, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, admitting that on Sept. 4, he had less than 15 grams of heroin in a car he was stopped in.
Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Carlson said the car Palmer was driving about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Fairview Drive and Winding Lane was stopped by Champaign police for alleged traffic violations.
Carlson said Palmer initially gave police a false name. They learned he was driving with an expired license. The heroin was discovered in a search of the car after he was taken into custody. Authorities initially thought it was cocaine but Carlson said the state crime lab determined it was heroin.
A more serious charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance was dismissed in return for Palmer's plea. A petition to revoke the probation he was serving at the time for domestic battery was also withdrawn.
Carlson said Palmer had other adult convictions for theft and interference with a report of domestic violence and a juvenile adjudication for aggravated arson.
