In 1914, nearly 1,500 University of Illinois students joined in to remove snow and slush from walks and streets around Champaign-Urbana today. Their work extended almost to the Illinois Central tracks on the west and throughout the university section of Urbana on the east. Occasionally the workers on one side of the street would stop shoveling to throw snowballs at the boys on the other side.
In 1964, the Urbana Association of Commerce is discussing several plans for renovating downtown Urbana, including covering sidewalks with a canopy, installing heating units beneath the canopies, new sidewalks with brick inserts and planting trees and shrubs.
In 1999, Vermilion County officials and correctional employees have failed to settle on a new contract through mediation and the labor dispute now will go to arbitration. The county jail's 35 employees have been working without a contract since Nov. 30, 1997.
