EVANSTON — Champaign Central’s Payton Woods was the highest area finisher Friday in the preliminaries at the IHSA boys’ swimming and diving state meet.
The Maroons sophomore placed 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.74 seconds. Woods missed advancing to Saturday’s consolation finals by 0.12 second.
The top six finishers in preliminaries qualified for the championship finals, with the next six earning a spot in the consolation finals.
Central senior Evan Miller was the next-highest area performer, placing 23rd in the 200 individual medley in 1 minute, 59.48 seconds. Miller also was 33rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.80).
Tristan Wolfe of Danville bettered his first-place sectional time in the 100 freestyle while placing 37th. The Vikings junior clocked a 49.73 after going 49.95 last Saturday at the Champaign Sectional.
Wolfe was the lone area entry to swim faster at state than at sectionals.
Of Central’s three relays at state, the 200 freestyle unit finished highest. The foursome of Woods, Scott Wierschem, Riley Kemper and Brandon Bell placed 27th in 1:30.78.
