LAFAYETTE, La. — The No. 6 Illinois men’s golf team fired the lowest 18-hole team score in relation to par in school history Monday while building a commanding 13-stroke lead in the Louisiana Classics.
Led by Brian Campbell’s 6-under-par 66, the Illini shot an 18-under 270 in the second round. The previous mark was 15 under. Illinois finished the day with a 549 total, the second-best 36-hole score in school history.
“I thought the way we finished the first round helped propel us into the second round,” UI coach Mike Small said. “We started kind of flat in the morning, but the way we finished the last five or six holes (of the first round) was a big key for us (Monday).”
Runner-up LSU sits at 562 entering Tuesday’s final round.
Campbell, at 9-under 135, holds the individual lead by 1 stroke over LSU’s Curtis Thompson.
