March 16 has been a busy date in Illini basketball history, both for the men and the women. Here’s a review of the 13 postseason games played on this date:
1963: In the Mideast Regional finals at East Lansing, Mich., eventual national champion Loyola topped Illinois 79-64 behind 33 points from All-American Jerry Harkness.
1986: The Illini were eliminated by Alabama in second-round NCAA action at Charlotte, N.C., 58-56. Tony Wysinger scored a team-high 18 points.
1989: The Flyin’ Illini began their run to the Final Four with a first-round victory against McNeese State, 77-71, in Indianapolis. Kenny Battle led the way with 18 points.
1997: Outscoring Illinois 30-11 over the last seven minutes, 14th-seeded Tennessee-Chattanooga upset the Illini men 75-63 in second-round action at Charlotte, N.C.
1997: Coach Theresa Grentz’s women qualified for the Sweet 16 with an 85-67 victory against Duke. Ashley Berggren had a double-double (18 points, 13 rebounds).
1998: The Illinois women earned a Sweet 16 berth for the second straight year, topping UC-Santa Barbara 69-65.
2001: Top-seeded Illinois got 16 points from Marcus Griffin as the Illini beat No. 16 Northwestern State 96-54 in opening-round play at Dayton.
2002: Michigan State ended Illinois’ NIT run with a 70-57 victory at the Assembly Hall.
2003: Illinois beat top-seeded Ohio State 72-59 in the finals of the Big Ten tournament at Chicago’s United Center. Roger Powell scored 16 points.
2005: The Illini women’s season ended with a 72-60 loss at Indiana State in the opening round of the NIT.
2006: Jamar Smith had six three-pointers among his 20 points, leading the Illini past Air Force in first-round action at San Diego.
2007: Virginia Tech scored the last 12 points of the game as the Hokies beat Illinois 54-52 in the NCAA tournament at Columbus, Ohio.
2008: Top-seeded Wisconsin easily handled Illinois, 61-48, in the Big Ten tournament finals at Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse.
