LINCOLN, Neb. — Illinois gymnast Chandler Eggleston finished first in floor exercise Saturday at the Big Ten Championships.
Eggleston posted a 15.725 in the event.
C.J. Maestas was second on the rings for the Illini, who received second-place showings from Jordan Valdez on the parallel bars and horizontal bar.
“This was a great finish to a good weekend,” Illinois coach Justin Spring said.
Gophers complete sweep. Illinois fell behind in both games Saturday against 15th-ranked Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn., and the Gophers swept the twin bill, winning 8-0 and 7-0.
“All weekend we were playing from behind,” UI coach Terri Sullivan said. “We didn’t make plays on offense or defense, including in the circle. Every time we didn’t, Minnesota made us pay. They did an exceptional job of grabbing the momentum and then taking control of the games.”
In women’s tennis:
Squad rolls at home. After losing the doubles point, the Illini cruised in singles and defeated Penn State 6-1 on Saturday in a Big Ten match.
“We are a strong singles squad,” UI coach Michelle Dasso said. “We have the ability to be better in doubles, and when we can put that together, we are going to be a tough team to beat. We fully expect Ohio State to be feisty and competitive (Sunday).”
Misia Kedzierski won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for the Illini, who also received singles wins from Allison Falkin (No. 1); Alexis Casati (No. 2); Melissa Kopinski (No. 3); Louise Kwong (No. 4); and Jerricka Boone (No. 5).
