After five days at Ebertfest, I really needed Diavolo, the dance troupe that performed Wednesday night at Krannert Center. Explosive, athletic and hip, Diavolo members danced what center director called "physical rock 'n roll." Right on.
At the Art Theater Co-op the knowledgeable, insightful Sam Reese introduced three shorts on Monday he called precursors to music videos:"St. Louis Blues," "Black and Tan Fantasy" and "Date with Duke." The first two are from '29; the last, '47.
Some friends thought "Bayou Maharajah," the music doc that closed Ebertfest last week, was too long. I didn't. I was fascinated by its subject, the late New Orleans pianist James Booker, and knocked out by his music. Check Booker and this doc out.
