CHAMPAIGN — C-U at Home hopes to raise $20,000 for its new daytime drop-in center for the homeless at its annual fund-raiser called One Summer Day.
It will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. June 28 at Champaign's Hessel Park, and will once again have individual and team participants walking with grocery carts and other wheeled items around the park.
The first 25 people to check in are given a grocery cart to push, and others are encouraged to bring their own strollers, bikes and wagons. Pets on leashes are welcome to join the walkers.
Each walker is asked to raise at least $100 and groups are asked to raise at least $500 in support of C-U at Home's new Phoenix day-time drop-in center, according to Melany Jackson, the agency's executive director. The drop-in center is intended to provide the homeless with a safe place to be out of the elements, access to a computers, a phone, counseling and other support services.
C-U at Home will also be collecting socks, deodorant, razors and laundry detergent that will be shared among several participating agencies that also help the homeless.
