News-Gazette writer Tom Kacich’s coverage of Rep. Rodney Davis’ veteran job fair and how Davis believes that we need drastic changes in leadership at the top of the Veterans Affairs Department reminds me of baseball player Yogi Berra, who could not distinguish men from women fans “running naked across the playing field — they had bags over their heads.”
In Davis’ view, privatizing veterans’ benefits with “fixes” such as his Hire More Heroes Act makes sense. Exempt veterans getting health care through the VA since they are clearly covered elsewhere and do not need employer-provided insurance. If veterans have to wait 115 days to get service, we ought to allow them to get it in the private sector.
The naked truth is, he wants to see the VA system go away. The Grand Old Party of Eisenhower and Dirksen has morphed into the Greed Oriented Plutocracy of Paul Ryan and Davis. War is not free. Fix what you break!
In today’s perverse health care system, there was no waiting line for Dick Cheney’s government-funded $1 million heart transplant. The greatest Republican, Abraham Lincoln, established the principles of the VA in his second inaugural address, which he ended with the words: “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
Don’t hide your face, Congressman. Veterans clearly see your “private sector” for what it is.
