Look back: Highlights from Melissa Merli on the week that was
I hate to admit it, but I'm a fan of the cheesy sci-fi CBS-TV series "Under the Dome," based on the Stephen King novel (even though I've never read a King book). Its second-season premiere Monday night was gripping, if a bit violent. I hoped the detested Big Jim would be taken out. But I realized he can't be; he's the source of all the conflict in the "Under the Dome" town of Chester's Mill. Dumb fun!
Movies on the Quad
For a change, I walked my dog, Skye, around the University of Illinois Quad on Tuesday evening, when people were gathering on the north side to watch the movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." It was shown as part of the Illini Union Board Summer Quad Cinema Series. Skye and I didn't stick around for the screening ,but maybe we'll return to the Quad Aug. 7 for "The Amazing Spider Man 2." The series is for town and gown.
Weasel Dreams is a weird name for a band. But what a band! Wednesday evening at The Iron Post, the sextet played post-bop music: some tunes arranged by Thomas "Shab" Wirtel and others by band members. Weasel Dreams sounds different because of the horn section, filled Wednesday by Jeff Helgesen, Tom Singer and Peter Roubal. The ace rhythm section: Gary Peyton, keyboards; Mikel Combs, bass; Josh Quirk, drums.
