The Family Dollar store in Paxton is closing in August as a result of slow sales.
PAXTON — The Family Dollar store in Paxton is closing in August as a result of slow sales.
A sign was posted Monday on the front door of the discount store, located at 100 W. Ottawa Road, informing customers of the impending closure.
"We are closing this store only," the sign read, noting that customers will be able to use the store in Rantoul after the closure of the Paxton store.
Store manager Jennifer March said the Paxton store's last day open will be Aug. 9. Its three full-time employees have been offered positions at other Family Dollar locations, March said.
March said the closure was a result of slow sales. She said the Family Dollar in Paxton has struggled due to competition with the Walmart in Rantoul, the Dollar General in Paxton and the Paxton IGA.
"I'm sad to see it go," she said. "It's been here since I was a kid."
Family Dollar is holding a storewide sale until Aug. 9, hoping to clear out its inventory. "Everything has to go except cell phones and tobacco products, which are being transferred to another store," March said.
The one-story building that houses the store is for sale. Realtor Kaye Harper of Coldwell Banker-Devonshire Realty in Rantoul is taking inquiries.
The impending closure of the Paxton store comes on the heels of Family Dollar Stores Inc.'s announcement in April that it would be closing about 370 underperforming stores nationwide. The North Carolina-based company reported that net sales for the second quarter of the 2014 fiscal year were $2.7 billion, down from $2.9 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.
