SAVOY — Several village residents approached the board of trustees to express their opposition to opening up access from the Walmart property to Ellen Avenue.
The village is trying to improve accessibility to the outlots in front of Walmart, as well as to the village-owned property at Jones Drive and U.S. 45. The village is preparing to market the property in the near future and looking for a retail business to purchase the one-acre parcel of land.
Village staff and many concerned residents agree the best scenario would be to remove the median into the entrance of Walmart, which would improve the flow of traffic and accessibility to the out lots. This option, however, is not possible due to a conflict with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The village staff is trying to work with IDOT to eliminate the requirement for the median.
Village staff members are keeping their options open by reserving a portion of the property along Jones Drive to create a through street, allowing traffic from Walmart to get to U.S. 45 via Jones Drive.
Amy Todd, a resident who lives on Ellen Avenue, presented the board with a petition from residents along Ellen Avenue and Lange Avenue, opposing a through street.
"We're all against it in the old village of Savoy area," Todd said. "We're against it for numerous reasons. We don't need that added traffic. The streets are narrow. And we are just very against having Ellen going all the way into Walmart."
Village President Robert McCleary assured residents that no decision had yet been made.
"We will keep you informed, I promise you that, and we will make the best decision as a board for the entire community," McCleary said.
McCleary reiterated the village staff's desire to open up the Walmart frontage road instead of constructing a through street.
