State high school champions from Kentucky and Michigan have signed national letters of intent with the University of Illinois men's track and field program.
Charles Burton of Louisville Male and Nick Gow of White Lake (Mich.) Lakeland officially committed to coach Gary Wieneke's team last week and will enter the UI in the fall.
Burton is Kentucky's defending champion in the triple jump and the state runner-up in the long jump. He ranks sixth nationally among prep returnees in the triple jump.
Gow, the Michigan state champ in the 800 meters, also will run cross-country for the Illini. He placed 24th in the Footlocker National High School Cross-Country Championships.
"Both of these recruits have the ability to step in and make an impact in their freshman year," said Wieneke, who was assisted in landing the pair by recruiting coordinator Tom Doyle. "Charles will help make up for the loss of (senior long jumper) Joe Knuffman. Nick will add depth to the middle-distance group and will be a good addition for the cross-country squad."
