From upcoming N-G Area History column:
Dec. 10, 1905 -- A new Illinois Central train to Chicago will be added tomorrow morning. The Chicago Nashville Limited will arrive in Champaign at 6:25 a.m. and will be in Chicago by 9:30 a.m. Returning that evening, the same train will leave Chicago at 5:35 p.m. and leave Champaign at 8:38 p.m.
Dec. 5, 2005 -- Amtrak's City of New Orleans is scheduled to leave Champaign at 6:10 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 9 a.m.
In 100 years we've been able to knock off 15 minutes from the 127-mile rail trip from Champaign to Chicago.
