The University of Illinois women''s soccer team rattled off 13 shots, but when it came to scoring goals, the squad fired blanks in its Big Ten Conference opener.
Iowa''s Kate Walse scored a goal in each half as the Hawkeyes defeated the Illini 2-0 on Friday in Iowa City, Iowa.
"We failed to convert despite having many opportunities," Illinois coach Jillian Ellis said. "We were not outplayed by any means."
Iowa, 4-2 overall, 1-0 conference, had only 10 shots on goal, but Walse scored on assists by Jenna Sorenson and AudraDondlinger.
After losing Wednesday at home to Eastern Illinois, the Illini wanted to spoil the Hawkeyes'' conference debut.
"We wanted to come out and get a (win), but it wasn''t our day," Ellis said.
Illinois, 4-2, 0-1, hostsMinnesota at 7 p.m. next Fri-day.

UI freshman Jessica Hayes of West Palm Beach, Fla., shot a 4-over-par 76 to lead Illinois to eighth place out of 16 teams after the first round of the Lady Northern in State College, Pa.
Hayes is tied for 17th in the individual standings.
Illini senior Karen Karmazin shot a 77, sophomore Lorette Lyttle a 78 and sophomore Nell Macke an 80.
The UI totaled 311. Indiana and Ohio State shot 293s to share the lead.
