Mammen wins state title
URBANA – Freshman Cameron Mammen, from Urbana, won the 152-pound Cadet Division freestyle wrestling state championship last weekend at the UI Armory.
He was 8-0 for the weekend and allowed one point to be scored against him. No opponent took Mammen as far as the third period. He defeated three IHSA Class 2A state qualifiers, including one medal winner. Mammen's title qualifies him for the freestyle national championships in Fargo, N.D.
He also will be a member of the Illinois Cadet Freestyle dual-team squad that will compete for a title in the national dual-meet series next month in Rochester, Minn.
Three other area athletes also fared well last weekend.
Sophomore Julian Anastasia, from Champaign Central, had a 5-2 record at 135 pounds and placed second in the Cadet Division. He also qualified for the national championships. Senior Adam Acheson, from Champaign Central, was 8-1 and finished third in the Junior Division at 171 pounds. Senior Brandon Ward, from Champaign Central, was 6-3 and placed fourth in the Junior Division at 160 pounds.
Lessaris picks Millikin
CHAMPAIGN – Central senior John Lessaris decided to continue his football career at Millikin in Decatur. An offensive and defensive lineman, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Lessaris was a three-year letterman for the Maroons. He was a Big 12 Conference honorable mention selection as a senior and earned the league's scholar-athlete award as a junior.
"We are very pleased that John has decided to attend Millikin," coach Doug Neibuhr said. "He has a great work ethic and exhibits solid leadership ability. We expect him to be a significant contributor to our program."
He also earned two letters in basketball and two letters in cheerleading.
Russell selects Joliet
URBANA – Senior Trey Russell will sign a letter of intent today to play baseball next school year at Joliet Junior College. Through 16 games, Russell was one of the top hitters on coach Steve Waller's Urbana team. He was batting .566 with 30 hits in 53 at-bats. Eleven of his hits were for extra bases. He has driven in 21 runs and struck out three times in 62 plate appearances.
Lacine chooses Eastern Illinois
CHAMPAIGN – Central swimmer Mary Lacine signed a letter of intent last week to continue her swimming career at Eastern Illinois University. She was one of the area leaders in several events as a senior. She was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1 minute, 3.14 seconds), third in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.04), fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:15.60) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.24).
Zarbuck headed to Augustana
URBANA – Austin Zarbuck, from Urbana, will attend Augustana in Rock Island and participate on the men's swimming team. He was the Tigers' two-time most valuable swimmer and a four-year letterman. He was the sectional runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle and had the team's top times in the 200 (1:53.74) and 500 freestyle (5:09.30) events as a senior.
The multi-sport standout also earned four letters in golf and two in tennis. A Big 12 scholar- athlete, he plans on majoring in either business administration or accounting.
Legion baseball tryouts set
CHAMPAIGN – The Post 24 American Legion baseball team will conduct tryouts Sunday at Centennial. High school seniors and 19-year-olds should report by 9:30 a.m. for a workout that lasts until 11. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., high school juniors and sophomores will try out. The time from 12:30 to 2 p.m. has been set aside for freshmen. Post 24 will field two junior teams and one senior team this summer.
Anyone residing in Champaign County is eligible to try out. To be placed on a team, a person must attend the tryout, even those who played in 2009. IHSA rules permit tryouts for summer league teams during the IHSA season. There is no charge to try out, but those picked will pay a $250 fee for the year.
