TOLONO – Two men were killed in a two-vehicle collision southeast of Tolono on Friday morning.
Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Charles Deakin said the collision happened at the intersection of county roads 600 North and 1200 East, also known as South First Street extended, at 6:28 a.m.
Lawrence Runnels, 50, of Mattoon was pronounced dead at 7:30 a.m.at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was airlifted after the collision. He was driving a small pickup truck north on County Road 1200 East when it was broadsided by an eastbound full-size pickup truck driven by Steve Largent, 24, of Sadorus, Deakin said.
Largent's passenger, Nathan West, 22, of Sadorus was also killed. He was pronounced dead at 7:28 a.m. Friday at Carle, according to the Champaign County coroner's office.
Inquests will be conducted later for both men.
Deakin said Largent apparently failed to stop at the stop sign at 600 N and hit the driver's side of Mr. Runnels' truck. Mr. Runnels had to be extricated from the truck by the Tolono Fire Department.
Largent was also taken to Carle, where he was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon.
Deakin said Mr. Runnels had no stop sign and, therefore, had the right-of-way.
The accident remains under investigation. No tickets were issued.
Deakin said the report would be forwarded to the state's attorney's office for review for charges.
