Between 2008 and when I started in the features department last September, I did some work in The News-Gazette's marketing department.
One of the things we talked about doing when I was in marketing was coming up with a cartoon version of our newsboy statue (you can see him at the corner of Main and Walnut Streets in downtown Champaign, as well on the background of The News-Gazette's Twitter pag [3]e [3]).
The statue is modeled after David W. Stevick, who merged the Champaign Daily News and the Champaign Daily Gazette [4].
Cartoon D.W. is now a reality (Greer Williams in the marketing department drew him), and Thursday, you'll see him wrapped around your newspaper, complete with lines for cutting him out. Our marketing department is starting a campaign to gather stories and photos of D.W. participating in various activities, like vacationing with readers or traveling via mail to readers' family members.
After you take your photo and write your story about where D.W. went, you can e-mail them to The News-Gazette [5] or post them on our Facebook page [6]. We want to see how far D.W. can travel this summer.
I'm just hoping he has some do-it-yourself expertise, because I'm thinking about tiling my shower in the near future. I hope he's good with grout!
