CHICAGO – President Michael Hogan's new executive assistant will earn $195,000. A former assistant provost, she could also serve as a sociology professor here.
Lisa Troyer of the University of Connecticut will start July 26, though she has been serving on an interim basis since July 2.
She was not available for comment Tuesday.
A predecessor, Kathleen Metz, earned $107,500 in 2009-10 as executive assistant to B. Joseph White.
The UI's chief spokesman, Tom Hardy, said comparing the salaries was a matter of "apple and oranges" since Metz, who has retired, was a civil service employee, and Troyer has been a professor and administrator.
Between Metz and Troyer, associate chancellor Margaret O'Donoghue served as interim President Stanley Ikenberry's executive assistant, earning $165,600, Hardy noted.
Troyer's appointment, which may come up for a vote by the Board of Trustees on Thursday in Chicago, is on a 12-month, full-time basis.
"She will also be considered for the rank of professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Urbana campus, on indefinite tenure," the trustee's agenda item says.
Troyer has been a professor of sociology at Connecticut and senior associate to Hogan, as well as his chief of staff, since 2007.
She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and her master's and doctorate from Stanford University.
Like Hogan, Troyer served as a professor at the University of Iowa, in her case for 12 years. She served as interim associate provost at the University of Iowa while Hogan was provost.
Other appointments to be considered by the trustees Thursday include amending the multiyear contract with women's basketball varsity coach Jolette Law.
Chancellor Robert Easter recommends extending Law's contract by two years, through April 30, 2014.
Her annual contract is a $160,000 base salary; $75,000 for radio and TV appearances; and another $75,000 for services promoting the program and the university.
No state funds are used for her salary, or for the other appointment, assistant men's basketball coach Jerrance Howard.
Howard's base pay will be $180,000 through April 30, 2011. It goes to $190,000 in 2011-12, $200,000 in 2012-13 and $210,000 in 2013-14.
