URBANA – A plaque and a 7-acre grove of trees on the north side of Weaver Park were dedicated Friday to the 45 people who have served as Urbana Park District board commissioners during the past century.
The permanent plaque was dedicated at a 10 a.m. Arbor Day ceremony on East Main Street. The park district is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2007.
"Without the dedicated commissioners who have already served on the Urbana Park District's volunteer board, and who are serving now, the Urbana Park District would not be the exemplary park district it is today," said Vicki Mayes, the park district's executive director, in a news release.
"These men and women feel a sense of ownership and pride in their park district," Mayes said. "They are knowledgeable. They work hard for Urbana's citizens. And they provide the vision for the staff to create parks and recreation programs that residents want and need, while at the same time keeping the district fiscally responsible."
Children from Prairie School joined the city for the dedication.
