CHAMPAIGN – The Technology Entrepreneur Center at the University of Illinois is looking for 10 teams from early stage, technology based companies to take part in a special 31/2-day workshop on campus.
The UI will host the Advanced "Invention to Venture" Workshop Sept. 9-12 at the EnterpriseWorks building, 60 Ha-zelwood Drive, C. It's a follow-up to the daylong "Invention to Venture" workshop held last February on campus.
This fall's workshop will be produced by the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance and the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center.
Teams will do critical and strategic thinking about their ventures with mentors and coaches who will help them formulate plans to raise money, recruit team members and develop technologies.
The workshop is being offered at six locations across the nation over the course of the year, with the Champaign workshop the only one offered in September.
Instructors will be VentureQuest founders Courtney Price and Mack Davis.
Davis' businesses have included a high-tech venture, a menswear retailing chain, an import-export fly fishing company and an entrepreneur consulting firm.
The National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance and the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center will make grants to some workshop applicants, heavily subsidizing their participation.
As a result, teams, up to a maximum of three people, may attend the course for $500. Additional team members can attend for an additional fee of $200 each.
Teams that don't receive grants may also participate, but their program fee will be $1,500 per person.
Rhiannon Clifton of the UI's Technology Entrepreneur Center said the workshop will take up to 10 teams, and four have expressed interest so far.
The workshop begins on a Sunday evening, then continues Monday through Wednesday, with sessions from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., each day, she said.
The center is also looking for two volunteer mentors to work with the teams during the workshop and for six months afterward.
