URBANA – An afternoon fire at an Urbana manufacturing plant on Monday afternoon caused no injuries.
Urbana Fire Chief Mike Dilley said firefighters were called to Guardian West, 601 Guardian Dr., at 3:12 p.m. Monday.
When firefighters arrived two minutes later, Dilley said they found thick smoke coming from the roof of the building.
Dilley said more than 20 employees were evacuated from the building.
When the firefighters entered the building, they discovered a fire in a paint booth/baking oven on the east side of the facility, Dilley said. The building's sprinkler system was already operating.
Dilley said firefighters used a combination of water and fire extinguishers to put out the fire. They had the fire under control by 3:35 p.m. and spent the next hour or so cleaning up and putting out small fires.
Dilley said firefighters left the scene by 6 p.m.
Dilley said it was too early to estimate the amount of damage to the building.
"There was a lot of smoke and water damage throughout the building, and there was fire and heat damage in the area where the paint booth was located on the building's east side," Dilley said.
A call to Guardian West was not returned on Monday evening.
