City plows still trying to clear snowy streets

Below are excerpts from a city press release this morning regarding the street clearing operations.

After working 24 hours a day since 8:00 p.m. Saturday night, City of Champaign Public Works Department crews continue to work on clearing City streets. Primary routes are open and passable but drivers are instructed to proceed with caution as many areas remain snow packed. High winds and cold temperatures over the weekend hampered efforts to clear primary streets to the bare pavement condition goal set forth in the City’s Snow and Ice Control Plan. Roads have been treated with salt but require the sunshine and higher temperatures forecasted in the next few days to increase their effectiveness in breaking up existing material. City resources are currently focused on clearing secondary streets and cul-de-sacs and addressing slick spots and drifts on previously plowed areas as needed.

Crews will continue to work today and overnight and plan to have all primary streets, secondary streets and cul-de-sacs cleared by Tuesday morning, with a few exceptions. Citizens are encouraged to call Public Works Operations at 403-4770 to report streets that are obstructed or impassable after 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday. City staff wants to remind citizens that while streets will be open and passable, some areas may remain snow packed. Citizens are reminded to drive cautiously, allow for extra travel time, stay off the streets whenever possible, and be aware of and careful around snow plows.
