CHAMPAIGN – Look for WICD-TV to launch a new digital subchannel featuring music videos later this year.
Tim Mathis, general manager of WICD in Champaign and WICS in Springfield, said the new digital station, Channel 15.2, will air programming provided by TheCoolTV network.
That network plays an "eclectic" mix of music videos, Mathis said.
According to TheCoolTV's Website, the network plays "the greatest recording artists of all time" and can customize its programming to the particular taste of its markets. TheCoolTV is owned and operated by Cool Music Network in Lawrence, Kan.
Mathis said he doesn't know exactly when the digital subchannel will be up and running, but it should be sometime this year.
Cable as well as over-the-air viewers should be able to get the subchannel after its launch, he said. But the subchannel won't be available to satellite viewers.
Several other area stations have made use of digital subchannels with the switch from analog to digital signals:
– WCIA broadcasts its sister station, WCFN in Springfield, a MyNetworkTV affiliate, on its subchannel.
– WILL broadcasts World, a news and public affairs channel, and Create, a mix of travel, crafts and special-interest programming, on its two subchannels.
– WAND has 24-hour local weather on its subchannel.
– WBUI broadcasts ThisTV, largely a movie station, on its subchannel.
