MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — Illinois gymnast Tyler Mizoguchi won the bronze medal in the pommel horse Saturday while competing for the U.S. National Team at the Puerto Rico Cup.
The Illini senior-to-be scored a 14.050. Rafael Morales of Puerto Rico captured the gold with a 14.525, while Jesid Pena of Colombia was second at 14.200.
Mizoguchi also placed fourth in still rings at 15.050. U.S. teammate and former Ohio State standout Brandon Wynn won the event with a 15.925. Wynn was a two-time NCAA champion in still rings.
Mizoguchi was scheduled to compete in the parallel bars finals on Sunday.
Two reach U.S. nationals. Two Illini gymnasts qualified for the U.S. National Championships by placing among the top 21 Saturday at the U.S. Men’s Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Austin Phillips scored 36 points and finished 10th in the 20-point program used by the U.S. Men’s Program Committee to determine senior-division qualifiers. Anthony Sacramento was 17th with 20 points.
Phillips placed 18th in the all-around with 66.550 points, a performance highlighted by a second-place score of 14.550 in floor exercise. The junior-to-be also tied for sixth in parallel bars (14.000).
Sacramento, a senior-to-be who entered two of the six events, won the still rings with a 14.300.
The national meet, also known as the Visa Championships, is Aug. 17-20 at St. Paul, Minn. The complete men’s field will be released later this week.
