CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are looking for three men involved in two separate armed robberies that occurred early Friday, one of which left a man injured.
Sgt. Dave Griffet said that just before 1 a.m., a Domino's pizza man was delivering an order to a home in the 1600 block of Williamsburg Drive in northwest Champaign. When he arrived, he was approached by one man then a second who put a gun to his head.
The delivery man, 41, handed over the food then wrestled with the man with the gun.
Griffet said the two robbers quickly beat the man to the ground, jumped on him, and hit him in the back of the head with the butt of the gun. He was also stomped on several times, Griffet said.
The robbers took the delivery man's phone, wallet and cash, and ran off.
Not having a phone, the man drove back to the Domino's restaurant and called police. He was then taken to Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana for treatment for a cut to his nose, an approximate 2-inch cut to the back of his head, a broken tooth and scrapes, Griffet said.
He described both of the men who beat him as black and around 20 to 23 years old. The first to approach him was about 5 feet 8 inches tall, 200 pounds. He was wearing a black ball cap, puffy black jacket, and dark jeans. The man who had what appeared to be a black semi-automatic gun, was about 6 feet 1 inch tall, 200 pounds, wearing a white ball cap, white jacket and a white baseball jersey.
Griffet said the delivery man was not sure how the men left the area. Police later recovered his phone and are continuing to investigate where the pizza order came from.
A second holdup occurred just before 3:30 a.m. Friday at the Circle K, 1713 W. John St.
Griffet said a female clerk was working when a light-skinned black man came in wearing a ski mask. He demanded cash from the register, which she handed over.
He then wanted money out of the safe but she explained she didn't know how to open it. He apparently lifted his ski mask at some point during the holdup, revealing to the clerk that he had freckles.
He was described as being about 5 feet 10 inches, 200 pounds. He was wearing a brown jacket with fur around the collar.
The clerk said she last saw the man run toward John Street.
