URBANA — Four men and a teenager were arrested at an Urbana apartment complex on Monday following a standoff that lasted for nearly seven hours.
Urbana police said Sherrick X. Cooper, 23; Terrell T. Larue, 19; Herbert C. Shah, 19, Eric D. Kirk, 25, and an 16-year-old not identified by police, all of Urbana, were arrested for home invasion at an apartment complex at 904 N. Broadway Ave., U.
First degree murder charges against Larue were dismissed earlier this month for the Valentine’s Day murder of Kevin A. Jackson, 24, of Danville.
No injuries were reported.
The men had knives and guns with them, according to Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin.
Negotiators with the Champaign County Metro SWAT team talked with the men, who were barricaded inside an apartment complex on Urbana’s north side. They surrendered to police at about 10 a.m.
Seraphin said earlier Monday that the men forced their way into an apartment at about 3:15 a.m. Monday at the Country Club Apartment Complex, but the woman who was inside was able to escape.
Some apartments in the complex were evacuated.
Seraphin said authorities didn’t yet know a motive for the men’s actions, but said it appears the apartment was targeted by the armed intruders.
Police from numerous police agencies were at the scene, including the Champaign Police Department’s SWAT Team.
The area’s bomb squad also responded with the team’s robot. The robot — equipped with a camera — was sent inside the building to help police see what’s going on.
