CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man was arrested early Friday morning for allegedly breaking into cars in his own neighborhood.
Champaign police Sgt. Matt Henson said an officer responded to a suspicious person call at 4:25 a.m. in the 1000 block of Cobblefield Road. The officer made contact with Jeremiah Cowen, 24, who listed an address in the 1500 block of Glenshire Drive.
Henson said Cowen claimed to be lost and after speaking to him briefly, the officer released him.
The officer learned within minutes that Champaign County sheriff's deputies had a run-in with a man matching Cowen's description the night before, so the officer stopped him again.
As the officer was talking to Cowen the second time, a woman's purse that did not belong to Cowen fell out from under Cowen's jacket. The officer then asked if he could search him and Cowen consented.
Henson said the officer found change, a GPS device, and cell phone chargers on him. He said Cowen admitted he got the items when he broke into two vehicles — one in the 1400 block of Glenshire Drive and the other in the 1200 block of Muirfield Point.
He was taken to the county jail and was expected to make a court appearance Saturday.
