The new year started without an expected cutback in service at a Champaign fire station.
Fire Chief Doug Forsman said Monday that a truck that was expected to be taken out of service on New Year's Day at Station Four is still in operation. He says the "brown out" of the engine company has been delayed due to ongoing negotiations to keep the truck in service.
Forsman said the truck is staffed by firefighters on overtime pay. City officials have said the "brown out" would save nearly $418,000 in overtime.
Station Four is at 2315 W. John St., near Centennial High School.
A cutback announced earlier at the Champaign Police Department also has not taken affect. The city planned to close the front lobby to the public at the Police Department between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. There's no word yet on the status of this plan since Champaign city offices are closed Monday for observance of New Year's Day.
