URBANA — A Champaign man is serving a 12-1/2-year prison sentence for having cocaine intended for sale.
Benjamin Sayles, 20, whose last known address was in the 1900 block of Karen Court, pleaded guilty in December in Champaign County Circuit Court to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said after Sayles' arrest on July 6 for armed violence, police found 3.2 grams of cocaine on him during a search at the jail.
Champaign police had arrested Sayles in northwest Champaign after he ran from them, throwing down a gun in his path of flight. At the time of his arrest, he was on parole for delivery of a controlled substance. He also had a prior conviction for robbery.
In return for Sayles' plea to the possession with intent to deliver controlled substance charge, other charges of armed violence and unlawful use of weapons by a felon were dismissed.
