BLOOMINGTON — McLean County prosecutors dismissed a charge against a Champaign man accused of trying to lure a young boy into his car in late October.
The single count of child abduction filed against Steven R. Ramsey, 23, who listed an address in the 1300 block of North Neil Street, was dismissed Dec. 30.
Ramsey had been arrested in connection with an Oct. 30 incident in which he allegedly tried to lure a 4-year-old boy into a car outside at a LeRoy apartment complex. Police said the boy told an older brother, who alerted their mother. A witness gave LeRoy police a description of the man and the car that led to Ramsey.
McLean County Assistant State's Attorney Jane Foster said new information was developed that made the case impossible to prove.
"There was additional investigation by the LeRoy Police Department, and an eyewitness changed her version of the events. As a result, there was no way to pursue the case beyond a reasonable doubt with the new information," Foster said.
A string of attempted child abductions in late September had Champaign police on high alert. One man was arrested in connection with one of those, but the criminal charge against him in Champaign County was also dismissed when the victim moved to another state.
