RANTOUL — Three men, found out of breath and sweating minutes after a break-in to a Rantoul business, have been charged with burglary.
Sgt. Marcus Beach said police responded to a burglar alarm at Super Cube Ice, 424 1/2 S. Tanner St., at 3:37 a.m. Monday.
The same business had an alarm on Jan. 3 and police found a back window pried open but no one there. The owner could find nothing missing at the time, Beach said.
On Monday, Beach said, the same window had been pried open and the front door was unlocked. Again, officers could find no one inside but as an officer was returning to his squad, he saw a car driving fast south on Tanner.
The officer followed the car until it pulled into a driveway in the 300 block of Champaign Avenue.
Beach said the officer said all three occupants — David Rumley, 18, and Thomas Outlaw, 19, both of Mahomet, and Tony Harris, 19, of LeRoy, were out of breath and sweating.
Beach said the three were interviewed and admitted taking part in the burglary to the business. He said Outlaw, the driver, used to work at the business and knew where cash was kept.
The three were charged Monday with burglary, a Class 2 felony. They were allowed to remain free on their own recognizance and were told to be back in court March 6.
