URBANA — A homeless man was charged with burglary and theft Wednesday after police caught him coming out of a campus cafe.
Sterling Palmer, 23, was arrested by University of Illinois police about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday as he exited the Bevande Coffee shop inside the Siebel Center for Computer Science at 201 N. Goodwin Ave., U.
Sgt. Tom Geis said police had received a call of a suspicious person being inside the shop, which was closed. Officers surrounded the building and could see through the glass windows on the north side a man exiting the cafe. Geis said he was later identified as Palmer, who is alleged to have taken a candy bar and an undetermined amount of cash from the register.
He was allowed to remain free on his own recognizance and was told to be back in court March 6.
